Karyn Collie Dickerson
Karyn Dickerson is North Carolina's Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014. She is a high school English teacher at Grimsley High School in Guilford County, where she teaches English II Inclusion and IB English

Since beginning my teaching career at Grimsley High School, I have learned that my role as a teacher extends beyond just sharing my love of literature and language with my students to being an educator involved with many aspects of student growth. My greatest accomplishments and contributions lie in how I teach students to use literature as that “vehicle for visiting other eras,” and perhaps more importantly as the “vehicle” that allows them to reexamine the world around them, to develop global and interpersonal sensitivity, to discover and expand upon their personal beliefs, to create their own voices as writers and speakers, to experience new ideas and actions from different perspectives, and to think critically and independently about the vast information around them. I use my teaching as a vehicle to help students grow academically, personally, and interpersonally, which I believe to be the true accomplishment of education.
